We were built out of a necessity to do better. Having strained our backs lifting patients, deployed away from our families, pulled refugees out of the sea, and everything in between, we lived by mottoes like “these things we do that you may live” and “service above self.”

 

Then we paused and looked in the mirror.

And at our brothers and sisters around us:

 

In the ambulance and on the fire line, in helicopters and on the dispatch floor, in skid steers and on lookout towers. And we saw one of the most underserved groups of people in our society. We saw their passion and their sacrifice. We saw their past and their future. We saw their loved ones and their legacies.

We saw that sometimes it was difficult to breathe. 

​

Hard to push on.

Strenuous to thrive.
